Looking for the Evidenceonly notes a silver brocade band from this grave (insofar as headwear is concerned), and I wasn’t able to find any other references to this kind of hat, apart from costumers who had made their own or were trying to sell them. ![]() There was also a Facebook post which references Birka grave 958. Jennifer Baker notes that the hat is “six pieces skull cap” made of wool with linen bands. I didn’t find very many references about this style of hat – the only reference I could find is from Looking for the Evidence, which notes a grave (#Bj976) from Birka, Sweden. Vikings Online has a hat in this style (with only for pieces) as part of their basic kit guide. ![]() ( Gotland Runic Inscription 181)Īnother commonly seen pattern is for the panel (skullcap style) hat – this is usually 5 or 6 identical rounded triangle pattern piece hat. These depictions include the Middleton Cross(dated to the late 9th/early 10th century) and Kirklevington in England, the bronze figure speculated to be Thor from Iceland (dated to near 1000), a figure of the god Freyrfrom Sweden (Rallinge) and a picture stone from Sanda, Gotland. The Viking Age.orgwebsite references Thor Ewing that “Although it is not possible to determine if the depictions are meant to be helmets or hats Ewing seems to think that it is more ‘plausible’ that they depict hats”. Reeds/straw would also keep the shape, but would be much less likely. These could also be depictions of helmets too – though there are scenes portrayed that don’t seem especially war-like to me… While metal would have kept the shape, the shape could also be kept by using thick wool, felted wool, or even heavy seams in lighter weight wool. There is however, evidence for a similar kind of hat – that I’ll call a conical hat style – it’s a much shorter pointed hat than the ‘santa’ hat, and stays upright rather than flopping over… the evidence for these hats is in the picture stones, wood carvings, and bronze figures, though there aren’t material findings. It is similar in shape to the naalbinding hats some people make, though I don’t think anything has been found to suggest they’re one and the same. He adds that “in one case, the hat was further decorated with four woven silver wire pendants” and on another from grave Bj644 a “woven gold wire ‘passement’ band was apparently fastened from the brow to the peak”. Peter Beatsonwrites that traces “of silk were found on the inside of the mounts” suggesting they were used with fabric – though that doesn’t limit the possibility to clothing. Two graves from Birka had the conical silver end caps (or what are thought to be end caps). The comments against this headwear suggest that the end-cap is not enough evidence by itself, and there isn’t any other evidence for this hat style. Since they were made of metal, they have survived even when the rest of the caps have not. The biggest support for this cap seems to be the end points. (Sometimes referred to as a Trader’s hat, Birka style hat, and Rus hat) The ‘Santa’ hat had a fair amount of criticism on the Facebook group, despite the fact that it’s seen quite frequently online from costumers. ![]() All of these are within 100m or so of each other on almost completely pedestrisnised streetaĪ beautiful place to visit, loads to see and do.‘Santa’ style hat with point-end and braided wire trim. The Waterford Glass Museum is across the road from the Bishops Palace too. There is an incredible wooden sculpture of a sword that has to be seen to be believed to the side of the Treasures Museum as well as the statue of Strongbow and Aoife on Cathedral Square. There's a wooden boat on the pavement outside. Reginald's Tower is another must see though the interior was closed for renovation on our visit. The Charter of Warerford is on display in the museum as well as a myriad if amazing things and the tour of the Bishops Palace is really interesting.Īlso worth doing is the King of the Vikings, an amazing history lesson using Virtual Reality goggles that really brings the Viking city to life. The highlight is the area around Cathedral Square where you have the Medieval Treasures Museum and adjacent Bishop's Palace Both are well worth doing and you can buy a combination ticket in either one. "The very definition of the real has become: that of which it is possible to give an equivalent reproduction. The real is not only what can be reproduced, but that which is always already reproduced: that is the hyperreal.which is entirely in simulation.". These terms are crucial to an understanding of the postmodern, to the extent that they address the concept of mass reproduction and reproduceability that characterizes our electronic media culture. These terms refer to the virtual or unreal nature of contemporary culture in an age of mass communication and mass consumption. Jean Baudrillard's philosophy centers on the twin concepts of 'hyperreality' and 'simulation'. Simulacra and Simulation is a philosophical treatise written by Jean Baudrillard in 1981. Jean Baudrillard was also a Professor of Philosophy of Culture and Media Criticism at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, where he taught an Intensive Summer Seminar. His work is frequently associated with postmodernism and post-structuralism. His many works include Simulations and Simulacra, America, The Perfect. He retired from academia in 1987 to write books and travel until his death in 2007. Importing images is by far the easiest way to go for this tool, but there is some support for video if that is the direction you want to go with your class projects. Once the video is imported, you can trim it to just the section you want, and you can start one clip where a previous clip left off. m4v, and you may experience some import issues depending on the codec. As for video, you must upload files directly from your computer, and there are limits for file size and supported formats. Of course, users can upload their own photos or snap a quick image with their webcam, the former of which is may get a little complicated with student projects and the latter of which may not look very good. You can also search for Adobe Stock images or search the web for photos with the Creative Commons license. Supported hosting services include Creative Cloud, Lightroom, Dropbox, Google Photos, and Google Drive. You can connect various accounts to your CC Express projects an import them directly from the cloud. Currently, this tool supports importing both video and image files. Multiple MediaĪnother excellent feature of Adobe CC Express video is the ability use multiple types of media. Your students don’t need the whole universe of features to tell their stories, they just need the right features. This video tool has everything your students need to make their story (or documentary or book trailer or historical analysis or whatever) beautiful and compelling, but not so much that they spend hours choosing the perfect font or changing every letter in a sentence to a different color (yes, my students used to do that when I was young and naive). The richness of storytelling is in words, voice, and powerful images, not in fonts, colors, and animations. You may think a ton of features and options is a sign of a better tool, but all they do is take your attention away from the thing you’re there to do: storytelling. The truth is, when it comes to web-based tools, less is more.Īdobe CC Express video has stayed true to this vision. We wanted a simple tool meant for certain types of projects, and through the process of seeking feedback we took our eye off the ball. Over time, the interface became cluttered and confusing, the very thing we were trying to avoid. The latter group would suggest all kinds of features and improvements, while the former group would suggest more design options like colors, fonts, and layout. Some of the teachers had no prior experience with video-based projects, but others had used video editors in the past. When we were piloting PrimaryAccess with teachers, we would seek their feedback on ways to improve the tool. ![]() Having dabbled in the process of software development, I understand the frenzy to add feature after feature. Based on many years of experience infusing student-created video into my instruction, I will highlight some important features that I believe make Adobe CC Express video an excellent entry point for including video projects into your own teaching. Adobe CC Express video is ideal for 1-5 minute projects that center on voice-over images and short video clips. In fact, it has never been more accessible than it is now, but teachers will have to plan with reasonable expectations. That doesn’t mean video creation is off the table for teachers. The truth is, most teachers don’t have the expertise or instructional time to invest in film production. If your goal is to have students learn more advanced movie-making techniques using various cuts, chromakey, and special effects (not to mention lighting, angles, and sound … crucial elements of the filming process), you will need to use a more robust video editor like Premier or iMovie. This is not a one-stop shop for all types of video editing. Adobe CC Express video is ideal for CERTAIN TYPES of video projects.
